Fall Haul

A medley of fall apples, red, yellow, and brown, of all sizes.

Left to right are Ashmead's Kernel, Wickson, Macoun, Cox's Orange Pippin, and Chestnut Crab.

The Ashmead's and Cox are especially good this year.

  2. Hi Adam, Could you please share where you found these? I’m asking about specific orchards as we are both in the greater Boston area. Thanks so much.

    1. Cox's from Autumn Hills, Ashmead & Wickson from Kimball's.

Lots of places still grow Macoun (including the above), thank goodness, so not sure where I got this one.

    2. Oh and I think the Chestnuts must have been from Kimball's too. Mack's, in Londonderry, grows these as well.

    3. Thanks! Just got a few different heirlooms from Shelburne Farms today.

    4. Shelburne has become a great source for interesting apples recently, and as I recall they have two older Cox's trees as well.

  3. I agree about the Ashmeads being great this year. I also got some very fine Ribston Pippins from Kimballs, and I want more!

  4. I got some stellar Ashmead's from Samascott's in NY this year. The Northern Spy and Sonata I encountered were also delicious. I don't know of anyone around here who grows Cox's Orange Pippin, at least until the tree in my yard starts bearing. I have yet to taste Wickson or Chestnut, though for the former, again hopefully the home orchard will come through.
