Scrumptious

A wide, oblate apple with a very dark red blush

My Scrumptious has a crimson blush with a beautiful dark region that that may reflect time spent on the tree. It is on the small end of medium-sized and very oblate, wider than tall. ¶

That blush is not entirely dark. There is a small yellow patch on one side, surrounded by red and orange streaks.

A crown of russet radiates from the stem well.

This sample is slightly ribbed. One must look closely to find tiny light lenticel dots in the dark firmament of the blush.

In other photos of this apple I've found online, the blush is more like this:

The same Scrumptious next to a ginormous Howgate Wonder.

Above, the same apple showing a lighter-colored side in different lighting.

How scrumptious is Scrumptious?

The coarse-grained flesh of this apple is quite yielding and is very juicy. The flesh is stained a very watery pink close to the peel. I think this is not red-fleshed flesh but rather some pigmentation from the peel itself.

Scrumptious's flavors are every bit as watery, but interesting: sweet with a dash of minty citrus. There is a bitter opening to the chew that does not please.

Orange Pippin describes a crisper, more flavorful apple than this, and Karim Habibi, who grew this apple, says it is a favorite of his.

So chalk this up as another review that, with the blessing, I will someday replace with another based on a better sample.
