Summerset

Streaky red apple with small white spots

Today's apples (I have two) are large and medium sized, both with an attractive and mostly saturated streakey blush over yellow green. ¶

There's also a light milky-blue bloom that isn't visible in the photo. ¶

The apples are more round than anything else; there is very light ribbing. The larger one is lopsided but I think that it grew that way competing for room with another apple.

Speaking of the vissicitudes of orchard life, the smaller apple has discolored indentations on the side not shown above. They might be the marks of hail.

Both apples are lively and firm and smell fruity and a little floral.

Crunch time

Somerset inside is crisp and juicy, the flesh yellow and coarse-grained. This one is sweet with a little balancing tart, though it would not suffer from a little more.

The flavors begin richly, both floral and citric, with a little spiciness. Later on, and in the finish, some vanilla comes to the fore.

This red apple is leaning forward so that we see the stem and greenish stem well.
The stories these apples could tell!

The assertive sweetness may mask some of these flavors at times, but makes this apple a likely hit with the high-sugar crowd. Honeycrisp fans, give Summerset a try!

Back story

In turns out that Summerset is a Honeycrisp x Fuji cross, introduced (with several other Honeycrisp x Fuji crosses) in 2017, by the Midwest Apple Improvement Association.

That group describes Summerset as "like Honeycrisp with a tangier flavor." Fair enough!

Summerset's true name is MAIA12.
