These orange-tinged-red–blushed apples are wide and oblate, with tan lenticels that are occasionally filled in with something dark.
There is modest ribbing, and a wonderful sweet aroma. The peel is glossy and the underlying color is yellow.
Ever Ready is medium grained with a decent crunch, flavorful yet not very juicy. Its flesh is a pale yellow. The balance tilts sweet. For flavor: corn syrup, and floral with a bit of a spicy kick.
These simple flavors form a pleasing whole.
Jesse Downs, of Down Home Farm in Readstown, Wisconsin, sent me this apple. He quotes the fellow who sold him the budwood as saying it's an heirloom Pennsylvania Dutch variety.
But I am drawing a blank on it under this name. I will post again when I learn more.
