The end of the markets

The suburban farmers markets end on Halloween. Today's in Belmont was the last until June. ¶

In an outdoor market, wooden crates are filles with apples.

Urban markets continue until Thanksgiving.

Today was unseasonably warm and pleasant, summer's echo, and the mood at the market was cheerful. There were 21 different kinds of apples for sale, none of them new.

Hale and farewell

Before taking my leave, I took the opportunity to stock up on Stayman and Melrouge, with a few Golden Russet and Liberty to round things out.

A wooden crate full of dark red apples, with a hand lettered sign that says "Winesap"
No, these are Stayman Winesaps, a different variety.

The grower called these Winesap, but they are Stayman. It's not that hard to tell them apart.

The nearest market to me now will be in Davis Square, Somerville, until the day before Thanksgiving. Two vendors there sell apples.

There is at least one more apple I expect to show up before then. Happy Halloween!
