Market medley

The selection at farmers market still rocks this week, even as a few varieties have aged out. (Photo:

Only two new apples joined the choir this week (italicized in the list below), and a few who were absent last week have returned.

It's always a chore getting the band back together.

Present and accounted for:

We're at 22 apples versus last week's 25.

Checked out from last week are Ginger Gold, Northern Spy, Spartan, Westfield Seek-No-Further, and Wickson.

I'm not surprised at some of these, but Northern Spy is certainly available elsewhere.

I didn't make it to Lexington's market this week, where possibly Mollie's Delicious was still for sale. However, today is very much towards the end of their season.

It's getting pretty late, seasonally, and the suburban markets will be folding their tents in two weeks. I don't expect many more varieties to show up.

Q: But where's Baldwin?

A: Volante Farms (which as of this writing lists 24 varieties) has Baldwin. So do other orchards and farm stands outside of the city and suburbs.

The year wags on

It's time to at least think about buying the apples you'll store and eat through the rest of the fall and into the winter.

They are mostly off the trees already, and winter is coming.

But meanwhile

Sing it, brother!
