MAIA test 38*

Each of the many russet-brown lenticels on this tall, slightly tapered red apple is dimpled, for an unusual tactile sensation. 

Test 38 is large and has no appreciable ribbing. Its gloss is a bit shinier than a satin finish; its red has a touch of orange.

38's coarse yellow flesh has a yeilding crunch and a decent sweet-tart balance, bearing flavors of green seedless table grapes. 

There is a nice acid kick mixed in with a good deal of sugar, and the effect is lively and spicy.

Apples change in storage, and I tasted mine in late December. A younger sample might have been crisper and/or presented additional flavors.

This one did hold up pretty well.

Live or die?

The fate of this and other test apples lies with the Midwest Apple Improvement Association. I'm just along for the ride.

It's easy to imagine this group fearing to invest in an apple with such an unorthodox appearance. Don't "consumers" want perfectly smooth glossy red fruit?

I can't speak for "consumers," or presume to advise the association, but it would be interesting to see how "that freckled apple" would fare in the marketplace.
