Another gentle ending

Arlington's farmers market ends on a day of fog and drizzle.

There were 22 different kinds of apples to buy at Arlington's farmers market on Wednesday, the last of the year.

This week marks the end of most suburban markets in these parts. Lexington's last day was Tuesday; Belmont's, today.

Urban markets will persist through Thanksgiving. And sometimes there are winter markets.

It hasn't been a great year for apples locally. I've missed some favorites.

Farmers struggled with pollination problems in the spring, and with drought and the usual biannual tendencies of many varieties.

Still plenty of apples, though, and of time stock up for the winter!
