September trove

Six varieties of apples, 17 in all, arranged in three groups on a rustic wooden step

Last Sunday, irregularly observed in these parts as Talk Like A Pirate Day, I went a little nuts buying apples.

The haul comprises six different varieties you will not find in supermarkets. One is unknown to me and will feature in an upcoming review.

So, how could I resist?

The apples in the photo are, from left to right, Scarlett O'Hara and Frostbite, Karmijn de Sonneville and Red Ruben, and Kidd's Orange Red and Mountain Rose.

Ahoy, matey

The moral of the tale (sparing you the fake pirate palaver) is that high season is upon us and if you do not seize it with both hands I just do not know what else to tell you.

I bought my treasure chest of too many apples at Shelburne Farm in Stow, Massachusetts.

This is a full-service u-pick with all the usual bells and whistles in season (donuts,  kettle corn, and (covid permitting) rides and attractions for children).

The place has changed hands since my 2008 review, and the new owners have taken a fresh interest in specialty apples like these.

These apples are available in the farm shop and at this time year the choices change daily.

Much respect to Shelburne for these, and also for faithfully posting the day's varieties on the farm's website.
