Freyberg**

Pale yellow apple with moderate russet, hanging from a tree

Here is one very pretty medium-sized yellow apple, decorated with russet like unburnished gold flowing from the stem well. There are channels within the russet that have a green tinge. ¶

two stars This apple has a very slight taper and is oblate and ribbed. Lenticels that do not present as gray (perhaps russeted in) are very hard to see at all.

Inside Freyberg there is wonderfully crisp fine-grained flesh with distinct cinnamon and clove and banana, perhaps a little anise. It has a super crunch.

Freyberg is really a pleasure to eat on a day of many apples.

What, then, is the story of this wonderful apple? It is a Golden Delicious x Cox's Orange Pippin cross from J.H. Kidd, the New Zealand breeder who also brought us Kidd's Orange Red and Gala.

The Orange Pippin website is a bit cool to this apple and does not note the flavors I find so striking. But Cumins Nursery, in upstate New York, highlights a banana-and-spice combination similar to the one I describe.

Both sites have interesting historical details about Freyberg, named for a former governor-general of New Zealand.

    1. Departing from my usual practice, I was able to photograph this apple on the tree.

However the sample I tasted (and describe) was probably a different one than the one shown.
