Farmers' market in Davis Square, Somerville, earlier today. |
The urban farmers' markets will continue until Thanksgiving, even though the suburban ones have closed for the year.
The nearest market to me is in Davis Square, Somerville. The market coordinators told me the market will be open noon to 6 p.m. for the next two Wednesdays, even though it's pretty dark by six.
There were lots of apples there today, though not many people, which gave the market a kind of forlorn vibe. I visited well before rush hour when there is probably more foot traffic.
Thanksgiving is on the early side this year and the last market will be November 22.
Here are the apples that were on offer today:
- Ambrosia
- Blushing Golden
- Brock
- Cortland
- Empire
- Evercrisp
- Fuji
- Jonagold
- Macoun
- McIntosh
- Mutsu
- Pink Lady
- Red Delicious
- Spencer
Not too shabby.
There were also great bags of utility-grade apples, for sauce or pies, that included Gala, Cameo, and Shamrock, as well as some of the Grade A varieties.
If you prefer other varieties, they are probably for sale now at orchards and farm markets.
But don't wait. Winter is afoot, and there'll be no more local fruit until summer!
