Welcome to pomological fall

THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR

A folding table laden with bins and baskets of apples at an outdoor market

This week marks the start of the pomological fall season, and the markets are swelling with fruit. ¶

I counted 11 varieties, including fan favorites Honeycrisp and McIntosh (though the latter are probably a bit early).

I loaded up on the excellent Chestnut Crabapple, exceptionally large (for crabs) this year.

I also found, at my farmers market, Gala, Gingergold, Paula Red, Swiss Gourmet, Zestar, and da Rosa, a sport (a minor variation) of Golden Delicious.

Two unlabeled varieties might have been Fuji and Cortland, the latter at center in my opening photo. (What do you make of them?)

What a difference a week makes

I only tallied five varieties the previous week: Gala, Gingergold, Paula Red, Redfree, Sansa, and Zestar.

That was based on a visit to the Belmont market only. Belmont only has two of the same growers as Arlington's, so there may have been more varieties available from the absent vendor.

I had commitments and computer problems that prevented me from posting last week.

Looking back and ahead

I missed some of my favorites last summer, including Williams' Pride and Gravenstein. But never mind, on to the next. The apple harvest is back in earnest!

  1. I've been enjoying the Ellen's Sheep's Nose that I picked up at Watertown last week and Brookline this week. It's a huge, oblong apple with a nice fruity flavor. The texture is a bit mealy, which is good for making applesauce.

    1. There are several varieties called Sheep's Nose, and I don't think I have had one that is ripe in early September. Do you remember who sold it?

My find for the week were the Chestnut Crabapples.

    2. I got them from Stillman's.

    3. Well, that is a new on on me! They do not come north of the river. I will have to get down there sometime!

  2. Sounds delicious, looking forward to tasting that exceptional Chestnut Crabapple and hoping the early McIntosh still turns out juicy!
