The suburban farmers markets ended last month, so today I traveled to Boston's premier outdoor market in Copley Square, under chilly, fast-moving grey clouds.
|
I was excited to find Gold Rush there, as I have never seen this great variety for sale at a farmers market before.
|
| Crates of apples set out under the cold sky in Copley Square earlier today. |
The Gold Rush grew on a farm that does not come to Arlington, my town. All in all I found 24 different varieties here from four vendors:
- Ambrosia
- Braeburn
- Brock
- Cameo
- Candy Crisp
- Cortland
- Empire
- Evercrisp
- Fuji
- Gala
- Gold Rush
- Golden Delicious
- Honeycrisp
- Jonagold
- Macoun
- McIntosh
- Mutsu
- Pink Lady
- Red Delicious
- Snow Sweet
- Spencer
- Suncrisp
- Winecrisp
If you are curious about any of these varieties, click on the name to see a photo and tasting notes. They are a good proxy for what is available now.
It was cold and windy today. The vendors and buyers who came out were bundled in warm winter clothes.
|
| So windy today that Kimball Fruit Farm affixed its familiar tags to the crates with blue painters tape. |
There are only a few more weeks of farmers market this year, and the harvest is showing its age. Still plenty of fruit to be had, but don't delay: Winter is coming!
