Windy market

The suburban farmers markets ended last month, so today I traveled to Boston's premier outdoor market in Copley Square, under chilly, fast-moving grey clouds. ¶

A wooden crate full of yellow apples, with a hand-lettered sign that reads "Gold Rush, $3/lb, crunchy, Aromatic, Spacy & Complex; a great all-purpose apple."

I was excited to find Gold Rush there, as I have never seen this great variety for sale at a farmers market before.

The Gold Rush grew on a farm that does not come to Arlington, my town. All in all I found 24  different varieties here from four vendors:

It was cold and windy today. The vendors and buyers who came out were bundled in warm winter clothes.

So windy today that Kimball Fruit Farm affixed its familiar tags to the crates with blue painters tape.

There are only a few more weeks of farmers market this year, and the harvest is showing its age. Still plenty of fruit to be had, but don't delay: Winter is coming!
