Sun and shadow

The penultimate farmers market unfolded in Davis Square earlier today under bright skies. The low November light had most of the market in shadow by mid afternoon.

Against a backdrop of sunlit brick and bright skies, warmly dressed buyres and vedors cluster around tables of produce in shadow.

You can tell that the end of pomological fall is near when the farmers start hawking their fruit in bags.

Rows of plastic bags stuffed with apples, all laid out on a table outdoors.

Predictably, the choices at this market shrank to a mere 15 kinds of apples, down from 19 here two weeks ago. That is still more than you will find in your chain supermarket.

The roster:

Still plenty of choices for pie, and eating.

I was surprised that only one of the two fruit vendors at the market had the venerable McIntosh. I guess this New England standard really is falling from fashion.

Time is running out

This week marks the last of the farmers markets around here.

That does not mean that you won't find apples anywhere after that, but it is a signal to pack some keepers away for the rest of the year while you can. Winter is coming!

Tables laden with produce, with a white truck in the background and the bright skies above.
