2025 begins (they're back!)

A wooden crate of green apples, with a card that says "Vista Bella."
(Vista Bella Apples for sale in Arlington, Massachusetts, earlier today.)

Not a moment too soon, the 2025 harvest begins. ¶

Vista Bella is an early apple, a good one. But these are early: VB is at its best closer to the end of the month. ¶

So these aren't great, except that they are.

Compared to samples harvested later, these green ribbed apples have a red blush that is sparser and streakier and more tentative.

A glossy green apple with partial red blush

I knew when I bought these apples that their texture would be a little spongey and their taste would be a little unripe, their seeds white rather than brown.

I was right.

But fresh off the tree these are reasonably crisp and, though tart, surprisingly sweet. They remind me why I love this fruit.

These unripe Vista Bellas have an authenticity that leached out of supermarket apples months ago.

And that's great.

A tag that says "Vista Bella: Moderately juicy with a flavor that is mildly tart. Good for fresh eating. $3.00/lb.

  1. 'Beauty of Bath' is our first apple of the season and although the fruits at work are already reddening up - we've had a lot of warm, sunny weather recently - they're still a week or two from ripe. Not that the various birds, squirrels and human pests take any notice... there are picked and pecked specimens on the ground already. Fingers crossed they have a bit of flavour this year as well. They're not always the tastiest, but we can always hope.
