A late report on early apples

green apples with red blush, for sale at Farmers market

And here they are.

They were also "here" last Saturday—at the Union Square (Somerville) farmers market—but I wasn't.

Then on Wednesday violent storms closed Arlington's market before I could get there.

So, first for me, maybe old news for you.

Among the early apples, I favor Vista Bella, and got some.

Bin of green, red-blushed apples with a sign that reads, "Vista Bella, moderately juicy with a flavor that is mildly tart, good for fresh eating, $250 lb."

There is just a lot more going in with this apple than the other super-earlies. Vista is well balanced with hints of berries and, this year anyway, banana.

Jersey Mac, at top, is not particularly Mac-like.

I am used to seeing more blush on these varieties in August, but my Vista B's are perfectly ripe.

I do think the harvest is running a bit late overall, due to a cold wet spring.
There were no Lodi apples (often the first) at all.

The season is on!
