Here comes the sun

Sleeping apple trees bask in the sun earlier today at Hutchins Farm in Concord, Massachusetts.

  1. I've been wondering... I haven't seen any news about the warm weather in the upper Midwest and its implications for apple growers. It seems it could make them come out of dormancy early and open up the possibility of frost damage.

    1. This was a concern around here two years ago. Even without frost damage, the quality of that year's harvest really was off.

  2. I am in Southern Wisconsin and our temps have been in the 70's and up to the low 80's over the last few weeks. Our trees have started to to bud out and bloom. Just to put that into perspective, our last frost date in this area is about May 10th on average. It will be interesting to see what happens. The orchard I help run (for fun) has apples, pears, cherries and plums. If we don't have a killing frost I will be interested to see how early the Lodi sets fruit. I have some trees coming through the post from Maple Valley here in Wisconsin. I wonder if they will ship earlier this year. I also have some blueberries and raspberries coming through the post. I would bet that since most of my orders are being sourced in the Midwest that they will be shipped out soon. Hopefully we will miss a hard frost but it is so early here to have this kind of heat.
