At the end of the first week in December, my Glockenapfel is a little wrinkled around the calyx end, but still firm in hand.
The long, tapered bell shape is a visual clue to the name of this apple.
That graceful profile, and pretty colors (green-tinged yellow, and small orange blush), make for an attractive fruit.
For a fuller description, and more photos, see my original October Glockenapfel review. Today I am mostly curious to see how it has fared over the past two months.
Flesh and flavor
The flavors are still acid forward, with spicy, fizzy citric and blackberry notes. There is some cherry flavor as well, so the tastes from October's sampling are all present and accounted for.
It might be a little more mellow today, but the flavors are still assertive. Tart-averse apple fans probably wouldn't enjoy eating one of these.
That slightly wrinkled area around the calyx end is perhaps a little bit sweeter, otherwise similar.
Some apples improve in winter storage. That's not Glockenapfel, but it has nonetheless preserved its original eating qualities well.
