The stingiest month

April may be the cruelest month, but this particular June feels like the stingiest.

Of course there can be no fresh local fruit this month, but the southern hemisphere had a harvest not too long ago.

Where are those apples? Not in supermarkets.

Or rather, they seem to dribble out one variety at a time, for short periods only.
So there were Smittens from New Zealand. Until there weren't.

Then were some Chilean Cameos that were so dreadful it would not surprise me to learn that the were from the 2017 harvest. (Probably though they were just mishandled.)

More recently, we had some Korus. For a week.

June is always a hard month for apple aficionados, but this June feels especially crabbed and frustrated.

There is only one thing for it: thaw out the sweet cider I put away last fall, and drink the autumn harvest.

Skoal.

  1. I've seen some Korus in the Inland Northwest, but that's it. Since I'm not a fan of Cameos I wouldn't have tried them if I did see them. There are still some Opals and Honeycrisps to go with the ever present local big 5 (Granny, Fuji, Braeburn, Red/Yellow Delicious, Gala). I look forward to some new discoveries this fall.

  2. The produce bins at my grocery store are pretty grim, apple-wise. A month or so ago they had a lot of Pazazz apples, which are excellent and I bought up a bunch. They have an excellent texture and a light tannic bitterness in the aftertaste, pretty good for late spring.

  3. I was very surprised to see Koru at my local Ralphs this week!
