When external links die, I fix what I can or delete them (with a rewrite) from the post.
If they can't be fixed, and yet I want to say "there was a link here" (to explain why a sentence was written a particular way), I redirect the link to this page.
Link rot is a common, if regrettable, feature of the internet. The older the link, the more likely the rot.
Most of my bad links are in comments, because I cannot edit any of those. Those will continue to point into the void.
