Early farewell

Wooden boxes full of apples

Yesterday was the last Wednesday of October and thus the end, until next June, of Arlington's farmer's market. ¶

This is the earliest closing the calendar allows. Were Halloween just a day later, we'd have another week.

The suburban markets are closing, but the urban ones will persist until Thanksgiving.

And there are winter markets too.

Report

There were 17 varieties for sale this week:
  • Ambrosia
  • Blushing Golden
  • Brock
  • Cortland
  • Cameo
  • Empire
  • Evercrisp
  • Fuji
  • Gala
  • Jonagold
  • Macoun
  • McIntosh
  • Melrouge
  • Mutsu
  • Red Delicious
  • Winesap
  • Spencer

Not too shabby, and of course we've seen many more in the course of the season, but in the past there have been around 25 varieties this time of year.

It's the legacy of the late spring freeze.

I can't exactly say which are new this week, because I have been traveling. But Brock, Cameo, Evercrisp, and Winesap had not shown up before I went away.
