October is apple fat, and the market is happy. But behind the scenes things are winding down.
Vendors at this week's farmers market were selling 25 different kinds of apples, and of course there are even more out there at the moment.
But on the farm, most of the fruit is off the trees. Many (though not all) of the markets will close for the year after next week.
Squash and root vegetables are sharing the stage with the apples. Winter is coming.
We've got 25 different kinds of apples from which to choose this week, up from 23 last.
Arguably the current tally should be counted as 24, because Melrouge is a sport, a minor variant, of Melrose.
No sign this week of last week's Ginger Gold, Blushing Golden, or Granny Smith, though the last two may well be back.
Spartan returned this week after a hiatus.
Though well into the season, this week marked the annual debut of Cameo, Jonathan, and Stayman Winesap. There's a dance in the old girl yet.

October markets are happy markets. Today's photos are from Thursday's in Belmont, Massachusetts. |
Ha! When I read the title, I thought it meant you had tasted 25 new apples in October... Wishing that that many apples find their way to you!
ReplyDeleteNot my greatest title, that! What struck me about the mood of the market on that unusually warm sunny October day was how happy everybody seemed to be to be there.
