It has been called the Christmas apple, but the best that I ate this year were in February. We had them on the farm in Kansas and I have eaten them from orchards in Virginia and West Virginia, so they seem to do well at that latitude. The tree is a bit 'willowly' and it will tend to alternate year bearing if the fruit is not thinned each year. When a teenager, I stumbled on to one on December 17, buried in tall grass under the snow in an abandoned orchard. That was 60 years ago and it is still the most memorable apple that I have ever eaten.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
