That is when one can find that singular "powdery" mouth-feel that I think of as a kind of astringency.Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245776593991049317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8647355176632077968.post-89648146555665596862023-12-28T10:36:30.862-05:002023-12-28T10:36:30.862-05:00I found these for the first time a few weeks ago a...I found these for the first time a few weeks ago at a star market in Waltham. I had low expectations given the source and how late in the year it is, but they were very tasty - almost painfully sweet, but the texture and flavor were excellent. Maybe they get significantly sweeter as they age? By far the sweetest tasting apple I've had.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8647355176632077968.post-85529571311728130322023-10-15T17:29:10.597-04:002023-10-15T17:29:10.597-04:00@Narcisse, you might want to read the review I wro...@Narcisse, you might want to read the review I wrote once I was able to get a really good example of this apple. I gave it two stars, which in my book is a pretty high rating.

The tl;dnr is that this is an unusual and satisfying apple, but fragile and hard to find in top form. Licensing restrictions has kept them out of New England, except for these second-rate imports. I was traveling when I finally got a good one.Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245776593991049317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8647355176632077968.post-49823859741922974342023-10-15T08:46:15.626-04:002023-10-15T08:46:15.626-04:00I picked up a bag of these from a local orchard fo...I picked up a bag of these from a local orchard for $4.99. I didn't know the first thing about this apple and I bought the bag for the price and quantity (thinking to make apple sauce). I have to say that these were unlike any apple that I have ever eaten! So much so that I then looked them up. The crunch was out of this world spectacular and the taste was outrageously good. I wouldn't eat honeycrisps with access to these apples. Outstanding taste, tartness, and surreal crunch. I'm not an apple aficionado...by any means. But if they are not tasting good to you maybe they aren't fresh? I'm in Warwick, NY–an apple capital. Their best qualities can deteriorate fast.

My first take on this variety, based on less-than-stellar samples, was a lot like yours: what's the big deal?

It's not so easy to get good Sweet Tangos where I live precisely because the cartel that controls them is so restrictive.

Personally I am glad to see an apple win fans for more than just redness and sugar sugar sugar.

Adamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06245776593991049317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8647355176632077968.post-51100044066808535652013-01-11T23:49:43.189-05:002013-01-11T23:49:43.189-05:00Im not sure why these apples get so much buzz. Im not certain the grafters have tasted one. They cant legally graft them without a license. The flavor is very average, texture and snap of the Honeycrisp with a little more depth from the Zestar! A well ripened Gala is superior in terms of supermarket varieties IMO. *shrugs*Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
