Midwinter is the time each year when I rate the previous year's apples, on a qualitative scale from
<a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/p/apple-ratings-explained.html" target="_blank">one to three stars</a>.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>
<p>
I've already published my
<a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/2024/02/a-sea-of-stars.html" target="_blank">one-star ratings for 2023</a>, and today I award two stars, "worth a journey."<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>
</p>
<p>
One star is "very good, worth choosing." Most apples are, and I am generous
with this rating.
</p>
<p>
But two stars is a step up, and I am judicious about handing those out. Of the
thirty-nine varieties I sampled for the first time in 2023, eight earn the
double star.<span></span></p><a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/2024/02/binary-stars-of-2023.html#more"></a>Adamhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06245776593991049317noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8647355176632077968.post-42229083078806010362024-02-04T13:31:00.002-05:002024-02-11T08:58:13.181-05:00A sea of stars<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;">

2023 was a banner year for this blog. Apple reviews are the heart of
this project, and I was able to publish 39 of them.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>

<p>
That is more than any year except for the first two: 2008 (44) and 2009 (41).<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>

<p>
Having so many apples challenges my practice of rating them once a year according to
my qualitative system of <a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/2023/12/twenty-apples-in-three-days.html" target="_blank">one to three stars</a>.

My original thought, in 2008, was to <a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/2008/07/good-eating.html" target="_blank">blog about apples for a year</a>, then find
something else to do.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>

<p>
I would not have continued after that first year but for the comments I began
to get from readers. They are both learned and, for me, validating.

<p>You make this place richer and more interesting.</p>
<p>
Changes in browser technology, however, are making it harder to comment,
and to know when someone has <i>replied</i> to a comment.

<p>
I want to thank readers who share their thoughts here, and try to address
those tech issues.

<p style="text-align: left;">I have 3 small apples from Moldova.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span></p>

Other than that, no information. They could be a Moldovan cultivar, a chance
seedling, or a variety that originated elsewhere.

<p style="text-align: left;">
They are ribbed and oblate with a slight taper. Calyx open, color a very green
tinted yellow with a patchy, streaky partial red blush.

The above combination of rosy blush, light brown russet, and green-tinged
yellow (in the unblushed peel) makes this sample a complex visual treat.

Today we consider a large medium apple, oblate with a slight taper. It is very
regular and symmetrical.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>

Hamid's Red Pippin is indeed a pretty red, saturated and deep on one
side, over yellow, wearing a russet cap. Small light lenticels are
distinct in the dark part of blush but hard to spot on the other half.

I seek out apples when I travel. It's a rewarding way to connect with another
land and its culture<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>.

<p>
But I don't go so far as to plan entire trips around the pomaceous fruit. That
reflects my priorities, but sometimes leads to missed opportunities<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>.

<p>
A recent October trip to England yielded many of those, but also many apples.

Its appearance, the rough golden brown with a bit of mustard yellow peeping
though, was typical of the Egremonts I saw.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>

<p>
However, my freshest and best example was the one from
<a href="https://adamapples.blogspot.com/2023/11/keepers-nursery.html" target="_blank">Keeper's Nursery</a>, and it looked just a little different.

<p>
A russeted sport of Norfolk Royal, mine is medium sized, classically shaped,
and slightly oblate.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>
</p>
<p>
This apple features a partial red blush that is quite saturated in places over
a pale yellow that is echoed by a pale olive-gold russet. It's hard to say,
but I think the russet interrupts the blush and accounts for the more subdued
pink areas surrounding the saturated red.
</p>
<p>
The effect is very striking. The apple is modestly but definitely
ribbed.

I guess this gigantic apple is England's

</p>
<p>
Howgate Wonder's <i>size</i> grabbed my attention right away. Beyond that, it
is conical and moderately ribbed, a light spring green with a streaky red
blush and a glossy peel.
</p>
<p>It's lenticels are small and indistinct. </p>

It took me a while to identify one of the characteristic flavors of this
apple, but once my mouth figured it out the taste was obvious.<span style="display: none;"> ¶ </span>
</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
Rubinola is round, oblate, and barely ribbed. The streaky red blush is a bit
orange where thin over the yellow peel.
</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">
There are not only streaks, but also tiny splotches of red floating against a
pale orange field.
