What's On Tap

Customers selecting apples from cardboard boxes at indoor market

There are fifteen different kinds of apples for sale until 2 pm today at Somerville's Winter Market, unless they have run out.

The apples: Pink Lady, Macoun, Honeycrisp, EverCrisp, Empire, Cortland, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Esopus Spitzenberg, Hudson's Golden Gem, Golden Russet, McIntosh, Granny Smith, and Gala.

These come all the way from Western Massachusetts, courtesy of Apex Orchards.
The weekly Winter Market opened last weekend, just a few weeks after the last day of the regular farmers markets. That's really quite civilized.

Winter market lasts until April 11 this year, but the apples will sell out sooner than that. Then there will be no more until the summer.

  1. I was there yesterday as well. Their golden russet and spitz are getting soft but still taste good and combined with their excellent pink lady I made two delicious apple tarts. Also picked up a bunch of evercrisp for the kids for fresh eating. They have good product and variety and I’m glad to buy it while it lasts, but at 3.75/lb it is not a cheap pursuit!

    1. Hi Holly. I got those too, haven't had them yet.

The Macouns were really prime though, worth the (admittedly high) price. Got to eat them first—they do not keep!
